One main factor we look at closely when restoring one’s barrier is Fatty acids (lipids). Cell membranes are made up of fatty acids and therefore inadequate intake of EFAs results in abnormalities in the skin barrier. Some common topical symptoms of EFA deficiency include; flaky skin, brittle hair and nails, itchy reactive skin and psoriasis. EFACS E/8 provides all you require to run a field service department within your business, or a field service business in its own right. With a logic driven Assisted Engineer Scheduling board, a simple yet powerful mobile application for engineer’s use and the power and scope of EFACS E/8’s functionality utilised for the back-office, managing your reactive and planned workload has never been easier. As orthopedic surgeons and enthusiasts of foot and ankle care, we carry the responsibility of continuously expanding our knowledge and refining our skills to provide the highest level of care to our patients.

For calibration stations with daily data, 6‑hourly LISFLOOD time series were aggregated at daily steps before the comparison with the observations. Like other operational forecasting systems, EFAS is always evolving, but the October 2020 upgrade included a step-change in EFAS hydrological modelling for medium-range forecasts. For the first time, the LISFLOOD hydrological model was calibrated at 6‑hourly steps over the EFAS pan-European domain, compared to 24‑hourly steps previously. At the same time, all hydrological medium-range simulations are produced at sub-daily steps, so that the timing of the start and peak of flood events can be better anticipated. This type of membership is available for those individuals from outside of Europe with strong interest and commitment to the field of foot and ankle surgery.
EFAS v5.2 introduces several minor changes to the system, including; Revised Notification criteria for Formal and Informal notifications, updates to station metadata, updated flood protection levels and major rivers layers, and updated documentation on FTP access. Each sub-catchment was calibrated separately but using a multisite cascading calibration (MSCC) approach, where the calibrated discharge from upstream river basins was used as input for downstream ones. The calibration was iteratively performed from upstream to downstream, from the catchment with the smallest area to the largest one, as flow routing calculations must be carried out in a serial manner along the mainstream of a river basin. Compared to the EFAS 3 system, the number of calibration points increased by 426 stations, up from 711 in the previous calibration exercise. However, some of the already existing calibration stations are now providing 6‑hourly data and thus different data were used in the EFAS 4 calibration, often on significantly shorter periods. LISFLOOD requires a wide range of spatially distributed input parameters and variables such as topography, soil type, land use, channel geometry, and river network.

Our collaboration with AOFAS is now entering its third year, and we have received requests from other associations to establish cooperative agreements. In the past two years, I have had the opportunity to represent EFAS at our members’ congresses as well as at several international meetings. This is also an important opportunity for our young colleagues, as more and more fellowship opportunities are being organized by our Fellowship Committee. The fellows are, in a sense, ambassadors of our association and represent its future.
Goodbye legacy Climate Data Store, Hello New Climate Data Store (CDS)!
For the fairest comparison possible between EFAS versions 3 and 4, the hydrological model performance score KGE’ was calculated on simulations using the same meteorological forcing data (but aggregated to daily forcing for EFAS 3) over 1990–2017. For EFAS 4, scores were calculated on river discharge averaged over 24 hours to be comparable to the 24‑hourly simulation of EFAS 3 (also matching the calibration time step of EFAS 3). Note that calculating KGE’s over daily discharge slightly increases the score of EFAS 4. One important aspect of a hydrological model performance evaluation is to use data which have not been used during the calibration exercise, so that the evaluation is a fair analysis of the model behaviour. This is often achieved using a ‘split sample approach’, where the hydrometeorological observational record is split into two independent periods, one used to optimise the parameters through calibration, and one used to evaluate the model behaviour.
For EFAS version 4.0, a total drainage area of 4M km2 was calibrated so that the hydrological representation of those catchments can be as accurate as possible (Figure 1). This resulted in a marked improvement in the hydrological simulations for most catchments, except in strongly regulated catchments, where the new calibration did not bring much change. On 14 October 2020, the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) launched a new cycle upgrade, EFAS version 4.0. For the first time, the LISFLOOD hydrological model, the ‘engine’ of EFAS, was calibrated using sub-daily steps and it is now used with sub-daily steps in all hydrological simulations throughout the system.
Letter to all EFAS members
- Three severity levels are highlighted, corresponding to forecasts of floods expected to exceed flood peaks with return periods of 2, 5, and 20 years (a return period indicates the average number of years expected between two floods of the predicted magnitude).
- They increase farmland biodiversity and also protect arable crops from the wind, thereby reducing soil erosion.
- By assigning weights and ratings to each factor, organizations can prioritize their focus on the most critical issues facing their business.
- This does not have any impact on the EFAS service which does not use the data stream used in the SYNOP layer.
- You will benefit from smaller mentoring structures and immediate onboarding into our alumni network.
- I extend my sincere gratitude to all members of EFAS for placing your trust in me.
- On the other hand, SWOT Analysis offers a more comprehensive assessment of an organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, allowing for a deeper understanding of the factors that may influence strategic decisions.
Traveling has broadened my perspective on our specialty, as we experience diverse medical approaches and rich cultural influences. This has shown me the different perspectives on the pathologies we handle daily. The energy and dynamism lie with the younger generation, and I hope this will encourage our younger colleagues to take full advantage of the fellowship opportunities that EFAS offers. All these efforts have solidified EFAS’s place on the map. I hope we can continue to build on the open and friendly atmosphere that is such a defining characteristic of EFAS. The GFM product is designed to deliver, in near real-time, critical information on ongoing floods events to users worldwide, including national authorities, emergency units, research centres, decision-makers and other stakeholders. GFM data can be accessed via the EFAS https://www.efas2023.org/forum/ or GloFAS map viewer or using the GFM data portal.
A bug was identified introducing errors in the initial conditions of all EFAS v5 forecasts since its operational launch on 20 September 2023. The error also impacted all reforecasts and the historical simulation from 01 January 2023. EFAS is an operational system so it is important we are made aware of issues/errors in our system in a timely manner. If you find a problem or any feature missing that you think should be present, and it is not listed here, please let us know by reporting it through the ECMWF Support Portal, mentioning „EFAS” in the summary. Known issues include, but are not limited to, forecast issues, production incidents, and data quality deterioration. Yet tragically, despite major advances in flood forecasting, hundreds of people every year still die in floods.
The pan-European setup of LISFLOOD uses a 5 km grid on a Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area projection. EFAS configuration maps were created by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission from various European databases with emphasis on having a homogeneous base all over Europe. For the calibration of EFAS 4, EFAS-METEO produced new datasets with 6-hourly gridded meteorological maps of precipitation and average surface air temperature using point observations for the period 1990–2017 on the model’s 5 km spatial resolution. As part of the EFAS computational centre’s role, ECMWF is also responsible for developing and integrating into operation any improvement in the forecast model chain, and for developing, managing and running the EFAS web and data services.

The sub-region extraction tool has therefore been removed from the EFAS CDS entries for versions up to v4, and any area specified in cdsapi requests will return the entire domain . A technical issue linked with the processing of SYNOP data at ECMWF has impacted the quality of the SYNOP layer shown on EFAS. This does not have any impact on the EFAS service which does not use the data stream used in the SYNOP layer. Some technical issues are impacting the SOS data server with no EFAS5 forecasts available. EFAS data downloaded from the CDS in NetCDF format are incorrect between Tuesday, March 19th and Thursday, March 21st, 2024 only.

- The countries eligible to be part of EFAS are as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO).
- Gain access to online educational content exclusively available for EFAS members.
- One of the visions for EFAS during my presidency is to enhance the visibility and understanding of the structure of audiology education across various universities in Europe.
- Their task usually is to coordinate work directed to specific problems in audiology across different European countries, to come up with reports, consensus statements, or recommendations for further coordinated actions.
- Education is the foundation for strong academic and clinical excellence in audiology.
- The European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) underscores that surgical procedures on the foot and ankle should only be performed by medically trained surgeons who are fully accountable for their treatment decisions and outcomes.
- The situation is particularly critical in many low- and middle-income countries, where access to hearing care is limited, and there is a severe shortage of trained audiology professionals.
The location and prospective congress president of the upcoming congresses is voted on by the General Assembly. In even years, the EFAS General Assembly is usually connected to a smaller, more focused meeting (usually hosted by the EFAS president). We have come a long way from where we started and today, EFAS represents 28 national societies and around surgeons in Europe. Once your registration documents are submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. Your application will then reviewed by the EFAS Council during the face-to-face meeting (usually taking place 3 times a year around January, June and at the time of the Annual Meeting).

After this term the Past Chairperson can be a member of the search committee. The Board may co-opt additional members, without voting rights, for specific purposes, e.g. in relation to European Conferences on Audiology, or to help liaise with other organizations. The Board shall be responsible for managing the affairs of EFAS according to the general policy decided by the Committee of Representatives, and take initiatives to promote audiology in Europe. These accounts are to be submitted to the Auditors yearly at least one month before the General Assembly. SECRETARY-GENERALThe Secretary-General of EFAS shall be responsible for keeping an updated list of membership and representatives, records of all the activities of EFAS and the Board, and managing the distribution of information to representatives and members.
We are also advancing our collaboration with various national associations to homologate their curricula. If you are an an individual with strong commitment to foot and ankle surgery residing and working outside of Europe, you may apply for this membership type. EFAS is the first operational European system monitoring and forecasting floods across Europe. For the calibration of EFAS 4, a dataset containing daily and 6‑hourly discharge data at river gauges for the period 1990–2017 was put together at ECMWF, based on data provided by EFAS-HYDRO.
EFAS provides a wide range of early flood forecasting information to support national and regional authorities with flood risk management duties in arranging preparatory measures before an event strikes. In addition, EFAS provides a unique overview across Europe and neighbouring countries on currently observed and forecasted flood events. It is an asset to the flood risk management of large trans-national river basins as well as the European Civil Protection Mechanism. In addition to forecasting where and when large riverine and flash floods will likely occur, the service also estimates and maps the potential socio-economic impact of those events. Overall, EFAS 4 shows a marked improvement in the hydrological performance compared with EFAS 3, with more stations achieving a higher KGE’ score as shown by the cumulative distribution function.
Do the EFA requirements apply to me?
EFAS is an operational pan-European flood forecasting system funded by the European Commission through its Copernicus programme. The aim of EFAS is to support preparatory measures before major flood events strike, particularly in large transnational river basins and throughout Europe in general. The Scientific Committee is looking for experienced orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons committed to teaching and education to join the 8-member-Scientific-Committee team. The EFAS Matrix, which stands for External Factor Analysis Summary, is a strategic management tool that helps organizations evaluate external opportunities and threats.
If your application meets the membership criteria, the Council will suggest it for full ratification by the General Assembly during annual meeting. Benefit from reduced rates to all EFAS courses and events and meet fellow surgeons. If you are a CDS-beta API user, requests will be automatically redirected from the beta URL to the proper one until 20th October 2026.

If the EFA hedge is a boundary / ‘march’ hedge between two applicants, then it will be claimed as EFAH50, (in this example the right hand pink line). For both EFAH100 and EFAH50 you would still draw the EFA hedge as a line on the map as shown in the example. The following is an example of an EFA map showing two EFA Hedges (the pink dotted line).

For the purposes of calculating your EFA requirement, your arable land must include all of the land used to grow arable crops, fallow, temporary grassland, leguminous crops and herbaceous crops that you claim for the Basic Payment Scheme. Hearing loss is one of the most challenging health issues that needs global attention. Over 1.5 billion people worldwide live with some degree of hearing loss, and this number is expected to rise significantly in the coming decades.
LA optimums are around 3 to 6 percent of calories (1 tbsp., 9 to 18 grams/day), requiring about 30 IU of vitamin E. Obese people and those eating hard fats, sugar, and trans-fatty acids require more. When the conversion of EFAs to their derivatives is inhibited by the factors listed above, DHA from black currant seed oil, or EPA and DHA from fish oils and northern ocean algae can be given. Bad fats (margarines, shortenings, trans-fatty acids, hard fats, sugar and cholesterol), lack of minerals (magnesium, selenium, zinc) and vitamins (B3, B6, C, E), viruses, obesity, diabetes, aging, and rare genetic mutations can all inhibit omega 6 conversion. A second difference is that EFAs are perishable, deteriorating rapidly when exposed to light, air, heat and metals. Unlike vitamins, EFAs cannot be dried, powdered, and stored for several years.
